It is often claimed that this was his very last work. The menacing sky, the crows and the dead-end path are said to refer to the end of his life approaching. But that is just a persistent myth. In fact, he made several other works after this one. Van Gogh did want his wheatfields under stormy skies to express 'sadness, extreme loneliness', but at the same time he wanted to show what he considered 'healthy and fortifying about the countryside'. He did them in Arles, in the south of France, in 1888 and 1889. Vincent painted a total of five large canvases with sunflowers in a vase, with three shades of yellow ‘and nothing else’. In this way, he demonstrated that it was possible to create an image with numerous variations of a single colour, without any loss of eloquence. The sunflower paintings had a special significance for Van Gogh: they communicated ‘gratitude’, he wrote. He hung the first two in the room of his friend, the painter Paul Gauguin, who came to live with him for a while in the Yellow House. Gauguin was impressed by the sunflowers, which he thought were ‘completely Vincent’. Van Gogh had already painted a new version during his friend’s stay and Gauguin later asked for one as a gift, which Vincent was reluctant to give him. He later produced two loose copies, however, one of which is now in the Van Gogh Museum.

["charms","GC","Van Gogh
"option1":"Default Title","option2":"Multi","option3":null
["Default Title","Multi
["//epearl1.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/92224972.jpg?v=1539362786
//epearl1.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/92224972.jpg?v=1539362786
Title","Color

'-Rhodium over jeweler’s metal

-Hand painted French enamel

-1 1/4 inch long

-Universal size lobster claw. Gauguin was impressed by the sunflowers, which he thought were ‘completely Vincent’. Van Gogh had already painted a new version during his friend’s stay and Gauguin later asked for one as a gift, which Vincent was reluctant to give him. Van Gogh painted it in early 1886, while studying at the art academy in Antwerp. The painting shows that he had a good command of anatomy. Drawing skeletons was a standard exercise at the academy, but painting them was not part of the curriculum. He must have made this painting at some other time, between or after his lessons.

["charms","GC","Van Gogh
"option1":"Multi","option2":"Default Title","option3":null
["Multi","Default Title
["//epearl1.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/92226172.jpg?v=1528118546
//epearl1.myshopify.com/cdn/shop/products/92226172.jpg?v=1528118546
Color","Title

'-Rhodium over jeweler’s metal

-Hand painted French enamel

-1 1/4 inch long

- Will fit all charm bracelets & necklaces

Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890)
Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette
January-February 1886
oil on canvas, 32.3 x 24.8 cm

This skeleton with a lit cigarette in its mouth is a juvenile joke.
